We need to talk about Gaga

So yesterday before school I watched the Lady Gaga and Beyonce music video for 'Telephone'. Today I open up my weekend newspaper, The Guardian and there she is on the front page entitled "Pucker Face- Gaga's Lesbian Row" with anchorage of "A surreal nine-minute video by Lady Gaga and Beyonce, featuring murder and lesbian sex, triggered hot debate and half a million hits online within 12 hours."
And now it has actually had nearly 7 million.

(If you haven't already seen it then click here and let me know your initial reaction in a comment. If you have already seen it then read on and then let me know what you think and whether you love it or hate it)

But here is my reaction to the controversial video.

First of all I was shocked.
There was swearing. Both Beyonce and Lady Gaga said "motherfucker" and "bitch" was heard countless times. There was gyrating in bikinis against cell bars (which reminded me of an even more sexual version of "Cell Block Tango" from Chicago)
There was the moment when Lady Gaga flashed and rubbed herself against the bars of her cell.
There was groping. There was lesbian sex. There was murder.
And it was all so un-necessary. It's a great song with two great artists. The part of the video at around 8.10 minutes where both ladies are doing what they do best-which is dancing and singing in case you have forgotten- is great.
Lady Gaga should have realised that what her fans want isn't some high sexualised 9 minute inappropriate video (which simply does not target either artists main fan base demographic of tweens who look up to them both) but a less extreme video- well Gaga could never do "normal"- of them dancing and singing together and showing the world how talented they are.
Then I was disappointed.
I had expected much better things from two of my favourite women in pop music. I couldn't believe that Beyonce, or "Honey B" as she is nicknamed in the video gave the go ahead on this video. The video was so out of character for her. Normally I am used to her singing "Halo" or "If A Were A Boy" and of course my favourite video of all time, the sassy "Single Ladies" as Sasha Fierce. She is so talented she doesn't need to resort to demeaning close ups of her breasts (which I am sure the director Jonas Akerlund loved) and driving around in a "Pussy Wagon."
I used to think of her as so inspiring. She sings songs about being sassy and not taking any shit from men. I have had second thoughts on her old empowering, booty shaking, independent persona Sasha Fierce, which her fans (including me) loved after seeing this video which obviously is just meant to appeal to men.
Finally I was angry.
It was so blatantly sexist.
The guy who Beyonce kills by slipping poison in his food slaps one girls arse and there is so much dancing in underwear and provocative speech and dance moves that it is hard to think of the video as anything other than misogynist.
Male singers don't whip out their bits when they are singing so why does Gaga have to?
It just means that people don't take her seriously.
Which is a shame as she is so talented. She started playing the piano at 4, wrote her first ballad at 13, started performing at 15 and is so unique in the music industry of big-boobed-tight-mini-skirt types that her dose of crazy dancing with a telephone on her head makes her stand out.
But this video makes her stand out in completely the wrong way and I can't help but think that she did it all to simply create column inches and controversy.
You can't shoot groping, sunglasses made out of lit cigarettes, lesbian sex, a "Pussy Wagon", murder and naked writhing without expecting some kind of outrage in people.

Where fashion and music meet- Lady Gaga

Part 3 in our photoshoots inspired by musicians who influence people for their fashion as much as their music.
This one is for you Lady Gaga.

The Radar- Random links and things that have caught my eye this week...

1. Chanel are selling the temporary tattoos they used for their SS10 collection.

I was blown away the first time I saw the Chanel Spring Summer 2010 collection but the main thing that caught my eye was the pretty illustrations of birds, pearls, chains and Chanel logos on the models going down the runway. And now Chanel are taking inspiration from the fake ink and releasing them as temporary tattoos so we can have a slice of the Chanel pretty ink action.
Best of all they are self adhesive so once you get sick of them (as if you ever would get bored of a Chanel tattoo!) you can simply wash it off.
So if you are interested don't forget you can buy them at Chanel boutiques from the 1st of March.

2. Lady Gaga is the new creative director of Polaroid.

Yes really. She said that she wants to “blend the iconic history of Polaroid with the digital era” and is launching her own products which will be released later this year.
Fingers crossed she brings back the now discontinued instant Polaroid cameras!

3. Christina Hendricks who plays the amazing Joan Holloway in Mad Men got married.
Does anyone else watch it? I am addicted, roll on the series 3 boxset...
Normally I am not at all fussed about celebrity weddings (I despise OK and Hello! Magazine) but these photos are beautiful.
The costume designer for Mad Men picked out the vintage 50s dresses for the bridesmaids, only their close friends and family attended, they ate rustic Italian food and of course the bride looked stunning.
Watch out Christina I am stealing your dress and pretty veil for own my wedding day.
(Even though you already know about my Oscar De La Renta obsession)

4. The Lanvin SS10 campaign

It is just amazing. Shot by Stephen Meisel and modelled by Jamie Bochert the photographs are so dynamic and have so much energy you cannot help but stop and stare at them.
If this was Americas Next Top Model there is no way that Tyra Banks and co. would say that the model was “was holding back” or “not giving her all.” Even the chandelier is swinging with her for goodness sake. Nice one Jamie!

5. Glee!

I think that this is going to be my new television obsession (goodbye for now Mad Men, Skins, Gossip Girl, 90210, Project Runway, ANTM and The Inbetweeners...)
I love it already after watching the amazing first episode here on E4 and this clip of Kurt doing the ‘Single Ladies’ dance when his dad walks in.
Genius.

Parlour Magazine

My favorite local "Alberta" magazine!!

Like any magazine it must be held in your hands to be truely appreciated. The unique size, paper quality and content make it a staple on anyones coffee table. Parlour has done a great job with the web site to give you all the wonderful content online so you can enjoy it right now by clicking {here}. Cover girl Lady Gaga has helped to give these locals some international status, as Perez Hilton featured it on his blog shortly after its release...

Is Alberta Canada's best kept secret, or does everyone already know and I just live under a rock? And by rock I mean cable television.

"I'm just trying to change the world one sequin at a time”- Lady Gaga

Although part of me wants to shake her until she promises me that she will stop calling herself "The Andy Warhol of pop music" another part of me loves her weird and wacky ways.
I mean at the moment she cannot be parted from her favourite cup and saucer. It just doesn't get weirder than that.

So yes she is totally bonkers but in a brilliant way (and I really want to know how she does her hair bows...)
