Who is Jak and Jil?

At Toronto Fashion Week, it was a little nerve wracking having to explain that you do not work for that big label company but are instead doing things for yourself and making the necessary moves required to take your independent self to the next level without asking for a job or assistance! I'm in love with visionaries and independents. People who do whatever it takes to do what they love and Tommy Ton is one of these people!

He's sharp, always on point and his shoe fetish has me going crazy with each post. My heart thuds as the page loads it's really honestly breath taking.

Shout Out Out Out Outs!

I have to have to have to give a shout out to the following people who made LG Fashion Week an experience to remember.

The first person I bumped into was Danielle Meder, fashion illustrator and fellow blogger! She is absolutely wonderful in person and spent the week working on water colour illustrations of the runway shows. Thanks to Danielle I am the proud owner of one of her postcards and yup you guessed it, it's from the Travis Taddeo show! Travis was kind enough to sign my envelope and I can't wait to get home to put it in a frame so it can become a permanent fixture in the CF office!

Shout out to Miss Sly!!! She is definitely a trooper and a strong believer in fashion! I loved meeting you Sly, you totally got me excited about being in Toronto. I wish I could have been there earlier in the week! See you next fashion week you and I must make it to all the parties!
The SubAdult Years blogger, Rebecca Leung was also a pleasure to meet. I like her because she's very direct and speaks exactly what is on her mind! She also has this post on race and ethnicity at Toronto Fashion Week! You must read it!

Also big shout out to Adejoke Taiwo, Evan Biddell who knows how to throw a party and Travis Taddeo for a super wicked collection and for kindly chatting with me.

Till next time!

Kim

Long Over Due PRC2 Update

Hey guys I've been ridiculously ill over the past week and have only just mustered up enough energy to actually get some work done!

In anticipation of the Project Runway designer runway show tomorrow in Toronto I am leaving you with the last two contestant Q+A's who have left the show.

The week before was a heart breaking one that brought tears to every single soul as the designers shed light on cancer while working with survivors of cancer for an auction.

Jason Meyers was the designer to leave who was strongly criticized as being a gimmicky designers.

We had a chat last week about his experience on the show and where the rest of 2009 will take him.

I've been doing these interviews since the program aired and I can say today that Jason Meyers was very interesting to speak to. He had me laughing and chuckling! It is clear that he is extremely passionate about what he does and how he does things.
I'm pretty excited to meet Jason on Thursday and possibly schedule some time to see some of his works in person! Whoo!

CF: Hi Jason, Can you believe you lost to Post-Its?
He chuckles! People keep calling me asking me “Oh are you okay?” says Jason Meyers, Project Runway’s latest contestant to get off the show. He’s chirpy on this Wednesday morning. Tuesday’s episode had the contestants work with cancer survivors to create a dramatic artistic gown. The challenge had the designer hopefuls cutting, gluing and "postitting" for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

JM: First of all I didn’t film it last night so any emotions that were there I had time to get over, you know it’s coming, it’s the inevitable, cos like last week I was like “uhhhghhh next week is the week! It came…shit!” He chuckles.

I was really pissed , that was my whole thing I was like I don’t wanna go off on Post-It’s man! I mean I was really proud of everything else I did there. I honestly think it was an unfortunate situation for the sensitive breast cancer survivor models I don’t think that was um.. "he hesitates," I think we should have been able to make something really beautiful and really show our talent for that situation. But you know it was challenging it was a competition and it came down to Post-Its and it’s an unfortunate situation yeah but if I think I’d go out on anything it would be Post-Its.

CF: I'm sorry to hear you lost your model?
JM: She had breast cancer and she went through chemo and went into remission and it came back. So when I met her she was still in treatment or being treated for it a second time and she was saying it was taking a hard toll on her body.
'People are like was it sad working with women in that situation?' I think of it more of an inspiration, I think they really give you a different aspect to look at life and about what's really important you know, because when it came down to it we were just making frickken dresses from Post-It notes…So you know really it was actually, like I said if I would go out on anything it would be something like that and I don’t have a problem with it. Everything else I did I am really proud of and I had the opportunity to show the country what I can do and hopefully build my business from there.

CF: Tell us a little bit about your fashion history? It seems like you have done a lot of work in the fashion industry?
JM: I went to the Academy of Design and I’ve had my own line for 3 years now, and I’ve done some work in styling but nothing really to talk about. I know a lot of people in the industry because I’ve been in Toronto for 13 years now, I think I have a really good network here and meet a lot of new people and a lot of good talent.

My whole thing was I wanted to win, my whole thing was building my brand and right now it’s about coming from a business background it’s all about selling numbers and selling in a business that I can stay afloat in and that I’m passionate about and that I really love. When it comes down to it the creative industry…It’s tough, in Canada it’s tough, but it makes it worth it where it all works out, for me it was brand exposure and recognition so I could get out there and selling more units and be a striving successful Canadian designer.

CF: How did you even get into fashion?
JM: I was just passionate about it. I didn’t think growing up in Hamilton, being the straight up Catholic kid… I never honestly thought it was a career choice, because when I was in school it was science, geography etc and I was always stylish and liked to wear the new stuff but once I grew up I was like you know what why don’t I do this?

CF: How did you feel when your designs were labeled as “gimmicky” did you do anything to try and change that?
JM: You know I honestly feel looking back on this, I have…nicely put, I have respect for Brian Bailey for being in the industry, with his longevity and where he has come from I respect. But as a mentor that wouldn’t be my first choice as a mentor. Unfortunately I believe there is a couple ways of saying things to people, there is constructive criticism or it’s insulting, I feel like in the show not once did he say anything good about anything I did. Even when you go through the blogs, it’s Jason this, Jason that, there was no need for him to put that name over our heads, you know what you are giving me a gimmicky challenge, ‘make a garment out of a wedding dress that’s a gimmick right there. What was I supposed to do just make a long flowy dress? So I think I explained I don’t design like that but you are giving me gimmicks, I was trying to relate it literally to what the challenge was.
I took it with a grain of salt though, it was a great experience and I’m branded now and I think that’s more important than anything like you just said people may feel that you are a gimmicky designer, ah you know what I shouldn’t have just gone roar!!!

CF: Do you feel time was a big challenge in the competition?
JM: Time was a huge challenge, you get a budget and 20 minutes to shop for fabric and then you have to be creative in every challenge. It was really challenging knowing your body can go through that and keep working through it. I don’t do collections like that you get into thinking things out methodically, you envision it and then you start building it. If you get $150 you have no room for mistakes. But it’s interesting to see what we can do as artists.
CF: Tell me about your label?
JM: Well the label is a high end women's line I used to do suiting and blousing but I’ve gone more in the dresses direction, LA red carpet, celebrity driven like our whole society is. Honestly there are a couple good things that came out of the show but the show was no hinder to what I do as a fashion designer. I won the challenge with Elisha Cuthbert and that validates what I do as a designer.

CF: You seem to have a good connection with women..
JM: I grew up with my mum and my sister, they were the two ladies I grew up with so that made me understand how to relate and made me more comfortable.

CF: What was Iman like?
JM: She’s a diva but a diva in her own right. She’s been around since the 70s I believe she has paid her dues and I think she is cool but we didn’t get a chance to hang out with her one on one there was no 'just relax we are going to take you out for dinner'... but I think she’s cool.

CF: What do you think of Jessica’s progress as the show has continued?
JM: I have decided after last night and going to fashion week I’m not talking about any designers because I’m frustrated at how people were on the show because now they are all like oh his dress was ugly na na na na na and I think there are a lot of haters on the show and I’m going to point every single one of them out at Fashion Week! But after watching the show I’m like oh my gosh you guys are all assholes!

CF: Who do you think will win project runway Canada?
JM: The best designer!

CF: Who is??
JM: That’s all I have to say! You know not even, it could not even be the best designer but my opinion honest to God doesn’t even count.

CF: What are your plans for the rest of the year?
JM: I’m just working on my collection still, I’m going to try and work harder and recognition is huge and now I can walk into a store in Calgary and they will be like oh you’re Jason from the show and I’ll be like YES!! It’s opened a lot of doors for me and I’m just going to work that!

Woohoo March!

So February has come and gone and we are inching closer to Spring! Words cannot express how excited I am for April to hit. I know I really should embrace the current month but i'm too excited, I will be done school and I will finally get to see alot of the people I don't see on a regular basis!

Once again our banners have changed and I know we said we would feature a photographer each month, but due to you know... "life"... we decided it would be good to give each other a break and feature another art form that is key to fashion and that is the role of the illustrator.

Garrett Naccarato who is a regular blogger for Calgary Fashion is responsible for the tres chic banners that will be seen on the blog this month! I'm loving this first one and as he continues to work on the rest of the banners for each week, I'm more and more excited to show you just how talented and skilled he really is.

The Project Runway interviews have been fantastic. A funny thing has been happening where I am totally left in awe and inspired by some of the designers on the show and as I get to know more about them each week I am more and more impressed. Last week Baylor was the unfortunate designer to go. The drama of the show last week was intense!! To get a sense of just how intense it really was check out this blog post that got me howling with laughter!
Baylor should not have been eliminated, but such is T.V. life, it refrains from any sense of real justification. He was really amazing to speak with, such a wonderful guy. Incase you missed that interview you can find that ----> HERE

February was also filled with excitement as I was featured in the Calgary Herald for Lincoln Philip's column, as well as on the lifestyle website Martini Boys and on the radio station CJSW.
Yes, my parents are proud and I am proud of everybody really, the fans, Jordan, Garrett, Selina, Yana, Melissa, David and Darren for really making all this possible.

Press is good and we have been getting wonderful feedback from everybody so we are happy.

March is going to be jam packed with several events happening, illustrator Aimee Qiu will be showing her work at The Gallery this month. She is always really interesting as fashion comes into play with her work quite a bit. The Park Show Fundraiser will be taking place on the 14th of March at Artlife Gallery, please take some time out to support these guys, they are doing a fantastic job of revamping this event. As usual there are concerts up the wazoo, Shout Out Out Out Out March 5th at The Warehouse, trust me this will be amazing as the boys just released their new album, Talib Kweli, March 21st at Flames Central and of course Factory Party 5!!!

The Modern Leisure saw just over 1000 people at their last Factory Party and we're sure FP5 will blow that figure way out the water! Oooh. This month Melissa and I will also be in Toronto for Toronto Fashion Week!!! Yahooo!
Have a good month guys!
Kim

I'm A Barbie Girl...

Well not really, as a kid I did have a wack load of Barbie dolls, however I just wasn't one for dolls. My sister was more of the Barbie Girl than I was. Anyways, catching up on all the videos from New York Fashion Week, last week and the Barbie show was definately something I would have been excited to watch. Just because the dresses are cute and I really like the shoes the models have on, they are: "like seriously Barbie!!" lol!

Okay don't laugh but I really was a fan of Aqua yeaarrrsss ago.

"Commmon Barbie let's go party!!!"

Lately

Lately I have been thinking more on what to do when done with school in April.
Even though I will be interning for magazines till December, I feel the need to travel.
I have been craving Nigeria more than ever these past couple of weeks and with the mass amount of This Day/Arise sponsored events at New York Fashion Week and now London Fashion Week, the urge to explore the Nigerian fashion scene is at an ultimate high now. With more freedom to do what I want without being tied down to school I think I should take up traveling for a bit!

I'm thinking a fashion back packing adventure is in order!

The pictures below are from, designer and fashion blogger, Akpos Okudu, who I went to high-school with, she lives in Port Harcourt city which is where I spent most of my high-school days. It really does excite me when I hear about the fashion industry in Nigeria. 6 years ago there was no fashion glossy and no fashion bloggers or even young designers sharing their work with a massive audience and now it is literally exploding. I cannot wait to visit.

Aren't her photos adorable?

Interested in the Nigerian Fashion Scene?

Check these links out:

You can find Akpos on her very own blog: Ijaw Girl

And for great in depth Nigerian Fashion news: Bella Naija who started as a blog and has moved on to bigger brighter things in the Nigerian fashion industry.

So inspiring.

Yeah Dangermouse Was Cool But Dangerkat Is Cooler!

It takes a lot to keep a dream alive. Kaiti "Dangerkat" Pasqualotto knows this. They say this all the time about people but really and truly, Miss Pasqualotto is a woman of many visions, dedication and perseverance.

It’s an interesting period for Pasqualotto as she spends most of her time planning for her next big adventure in New York and Europe as well as working on perfecting her “Scamper” pants.
"Scamper pants" are what people would call the drop crotch pant that has been popping up all over the runways for the Spring/Summer 09 as well as Fall/Winter 09 season. They have been seen everywhere from Milan to London, New York and Paris.

What the world really doesn’t know is that Miss Pasqualotto has been spreading her innovative drop crotch “Scamper pant” which has been labeled a hot item in the world of fashion and has been selling her idea to audiences around the world for 3 years.

The irony of fashion is the timing of it all.
“I started making Scamper pants in 2006, so I was making them and I was really interested in Grace Jones and neon and all that stuff like the lightening bolts," said Pasqualotto.

Dangerkat first presented her Scamper pants to the Calgarian public at the Calgary Fashion Week of 2007. For a product that is so hot on the radar right now, it’s amazing to hear that people couldn’t take the Scamper pant seriously.

“Three years ago when I first made the Scamper pants I went and did my first trade show in Toronto and all I had was 50 pairs of Scamper Pants and maybe 20 pieces of one off jewelry pieces. I sold a few pair of the jewelery pieces, a few of the pants and people even laughed at me ...and I was in Toronto!" she says with her mouth wide open!

"I was thinking they would be forward thinking and I’m thinking I’m not progressive because 2 years later it is all over the place but I was frustrated 2 years ago. I had to spend so much to do the trade show, that was a good experience to know about all that but I spent a crap load of money.”

This all really doesn’t faze the determined dance queen. Sure they may have laughed but she stuck by her dream and realized that the Scamper pant isn’t just for anybody. “I’m not interested in selling things by the masses, I get super excited by selling one offs,”she says. Pasqualotto has a closet full of vintage pieces from all over the world. Her love for uniqueness is clear the minute you step into her room/office.

Each Scamper pant is of a different material, with a different design; there are no two Scamper pants that are the same in the recent collection from Dangerkat.

“I’m having a hard time not keeping them to myself, they are one pair and I can’t make myself another one and you want to make sure the best person has them right?!" she says adamantly!
Attitude is something you must carry when wearing your Scamper pant! You must have confidence says Pasqualotto.

“I want you to rock them down the street! I like to be able to just dance and be stylish while dancing so I don’t have to change, which was the basis to why they are stretchy. They have continued to be that way and I keep refining from the first version, ” she says as she looks over the new collection.

Pasqualotto is not just a designer but is also responsible for the House of Dangerkat, a dance house dedicated to high performance dance specifically in the department of “Voguing” and “Wacking.” It is a collective of arts professionals that synthesize fashion and styling with music and dance which is further enhanced by video and photography. The House is also active in dance education program worldwide and place dancers of the house in both student and instructor positions.

For Kaiti “Dangerkat” Pasqualotto, “it (House of Dangerkat) all started when I was at ACAD. I went to ACAD (Alberta College of Art and Design) after I did my degree; I went to U of C and graduated with Visual Art and a minor in Dance…Contemporary dance and then I wanted to get more into textiles and fiber work because U of C didn’t have that.”

She would move to Australia for an exchange program, which led to more experimenting with textiles. “I did my exchange down there and they gave me free range in their textiles department so I just wanted to make clothing, more wearable art. As a painting piece I would present a whole outfit as my painting and in Australia they were so down with that, they were very open there."

Pasqualotto would stay on at ACAD for a year focusing on wearable art and learning new techniques on how to manipulate fabric with the aid of Wearable Arts extraordinaire Dee Fontans. "I came home and I went to ACAD I saw that I could take anything, even with my degree, so when you don’t have to do anything for marks and you only do it out of interest it’s like the best way to do school!”

The idea of incorporating dance into the presentation of Pasqualotto's wearable art came with the need to always be different.

“I was like how can I be totally different from anyone else here and if I’m a dancer and we have this runway to tackle that’s like freaking a football field at ACAD! So that’s when I really started Voguing and Wacking. I started doing my own research just whatever I could online and learning about the culture and the dance and the art form and teaching whatever I knew to people, dancers in Calgary I thought would be able to pull it off even if it’s more or less just like I thought they would have a good character or they have that presence as a dancer.”

This was the humble beginnings of what has now become one of Calgary's most talked about Dance houses. The group have gone on to Paris to compete in major competitions and danced for big name acts such as Diplo and Collette.

The House features talented dancers from all over the city such as Ashley "Colours" Perez and Reggie Tenchavez who have been at Pasqualotto's side for over a year now and have traveled with the House of Dangerkat leader.

"I think this is the year for Calgary and not only for the House but for Calgary. If other artists can see that we can go and be successful and then come back home that is pretty big. It means we don't really have to move. She's (Pasqualotto) so driven, it's crazy, I ask her how are you so driven? I sometimes don't even have the motivation and to keep the motivation that is an evolution," says Colours as she is fondly referred to by the dance house.

Perez and Tenchavez see Pasqualotto as a visionary for not just the dance world of Calgary but the world as a whole.

"She is a vision and you aren't going to understand it but that is the image of the visionary. It's so new it's out of the box that you will never get it unless it is in it's physical form. You just have to flow with it," says Colours on the impact Pasqualotto has had on the dance community.

This newly planned trip will have Dangerkat performing in different locations here is a schedule of her Euro tour. Unfortunately Pasqualotto cannot take her entire House so these trips serve as networking and advanced booking dates for future shows that can include members of the house at a later date.

Another week gone by!

It's been one heck of a week!

First up, in exciting news, Alex at Sign-Co Designs, printed 2 super cool decals for the CalgaryFashion mobile! Snazzy hey? I jumped and squealed when I saw them! So if you see the jeep on the street honk your horn or something!! It will make my day... or maybe thats not a good idea, i'm prone to road rage! Eeek!

Between school, work, Fashion Has No Borders, the numerous events that happened this weekend, an interview with The Calgary Herald, a picture taken for The Calgary Herald, planning for the week ahead as well as future months, we all each somehow managed to take some time out to enjoy ourselves.

Melissa was at the ACAD photo third year show Friday evening and says there were definately a good variety of up and coming photographers. Jordan, Garrett and DavidJ were all at the Joshua McVeity show also Friday, superwoman Selina, covered 3 major events for her position as Arts and Entertainment editor at The Reflector as well as sat down for an interview with co founder of All The Best Things magazine Jessica TheWitt also on....yup you guessed it Friday!

Sean was Sean who is ultimately perpetually busy and I took time away from studying to cheer on DJ Noah York , Bizz Cash and Teddy Celebrations at the 3Styles Redbull competition where I also ran into Yana, we had a brief discussion about FP5 and our minds are just buzzing with ideas for the next CF installation! Saturday night, we danced to the tricks up his sleeves DJ from Vancouver, My!Gay!Husband! at the Hifi, Saturday night.

My roomate Tiffany Wollman had a reception for her art work being displayed at Art Central on Friday and the reviews are flooding in about the extensiveness of her talent! I can't wait to see them this week!

At Worth things are always exciting as Carl, Liam and I prepare for the new spring arrivals. You have no idea how excited we are about the new shipments coming in. It's going to be insane with labels like YMC, Generra for Men and Women, BNX, Conference of Birds, Fibre and Fellow, whew!! I can't go on! Overload!!! I cannot wait to try on the ever funky BNX and the comfy Generra stuff! Will I beat you to buying? I hope not, unfortunately my spending is frozen all thanks to that John Varvatos Jacket at The Gallery!

If you haven't picked up the new issue of Beatroute yet, I suggest you do cos fashion lovers I hear there's a new store in Kensington, supposedly vintage lovers will love this store. The owners travel around the world in search of material and vintage picks and bring them right back to yuppp Calgary! So enjoy the good weather that we've been having lately and check things out in Kensington.

It made my day to walk into work Saturday to see that Carl has passed Liam and I in the Worthy Training Course and has given us the labels of "Sick Employee's." For translation... this means we are super cool wonderful staff! :) Yay!

The banner has changed once again to show off the Fashion editorial that we did for February, what do you think?

Don't Victoria and Kaz look amazing??

More from the shoot coming up this week! Booyah!!!

I cannot express how thankful I am to the people that made this shoot possible!! Keep up with the Facebook page if you can for more news and updates along the week!

Have a fashionable week people and take advantage of the good weather and if like me you are preparing for a mid term somewhere, good luck ad rock out in your exams!!

Why I Like Nice Things

Via Alyssa

- H(y)r Collective shows nice things!

I <3 Paul Hardy

I met Paul Hardy about a year ago when my life was nothing more than broadcasting classes and journalism classes. At the time, I was losing my love for journalism as broadcasting is not my forté. The journalism program really is an intense degree but as I prepare to finish my last credit semester I think about all that I have learned and the people I have met because of it and I am grateful for the process. If it wasn't for the journalism degree I would have slept on my love for writing and photography as well as fashion!

Anyway, Paul Hardy is Calgary's most established designer. Hardy opened his atelier approximately 2 years ago and I must tell you that this is one of the highest local luxury boutiques that you will find in the city.

Forget about Holt Renfrow ladies, the Paul Hardy Atelier in Kensington is a nice small haven that allows for one on one time with the soft spoken designer. I love how special I feel every time I go into his store.
Hardy also provides an array of knitwear designs. I have been waiting for a long time to be able to purchase a knitwear piece from him and it finally happened yesterday.
It had been a while since I had been into the atelier but I caught wind of the Sample Sale that he will be having this evening through the ever styling Braydon (Thank you Braydon) from Jerome's. I had also heard that he was having a blow-out sale and I just had to rush down there!

I spent over an hour with Paul Hardy and I fell in love with a pea soup swirl wrap shrug (it is the same Grey shawl as the one in the second picture above). I love innovative designs that provide alternate ways to use a piece of clothing and this wrap is just that. Imagine a shawl with sleeves attached to the side. The possibilities are endless, I spent most of the afternoon playing with my new wrap-sweater and I am definitely pleased with my purchase especially with the sale discount of 50% off the original price!

This is what it looks like on me:

I cannot wait for this evening as Paul Hardy will be having a sample sale!!!!! Most of the women samples will be priced at $25 - $50 and all other stock including men's knitwear will be discounted at 75% off. It will be an evening of wine, cheeses and good conversations. So if you've ever wondered about Paul Hardy or ever dreamed of owning a Paul Hardy piece then this is definitely the evening to take a stroll down Kensington.

The Paul Hardy Atelier is located @ #4 - 1126 Kensington Road NW
